A simple guide for academics and LMS administrators
This article explains how to add the full ExpertEdge library into ILIAS so that you can launch ExpertEdge courses directly inside your learning environment. The process is short and only needs to be done once.
Overview
ILIAS supports external learning applications through LTI. By adding ExpertEdge as an LTI application, your institution can open ExpertEdge courses inside ILIAS without downloading or importing files.
There are two short steps:
- You add the ExpertEdge application in ILIAS.
- ILIAS shows a few values that you send back to ExpertEdge.
Once ExpertEdge completes the connection, the ExpertEdge library becomes active.
What you will receive
Your ExpertEdge contact will send you a short sheet containing the values required to connect ILIAS to ExpertEdge. You paste these into ILIAS during setup.
What ILIAS will provide
After saving the application, ILIAS will generate and display connection details for that application. You copy these and send them back to ExpertEdge.
ILIAS normally provides:
- A Consumer Key or Client ID equivalent
- A Tool ID
- A set of connection URLs
These appear in the tool configuration screen after saving.
How to add the ExpertEdge application in ILIAS
Follow these steps to connect the full ExpertEdge library.
Step 1: Open the LTI Settings
- Log in to ILIAS as an administrator.
- Go to Administration.
- Select Tools or External Tools (the name may vary slightly).
- Open the LTI settings page.
Step 2: Create the ExpertEdge application
- Choose Add New LTI Tool.
- Enter the application name: ExpertEdge.
- Paste the values from ExpertEdge into the relevant fields:
- Launch URL
- Login initiation URL
- Redirect URL
- Public keyset URL
- Save the application.
ILIAS will now show connection values for this tool. Copy all of them.
Step 3: Send your ILIAS details to ExpertEdge
Send the following back to your ExpertEdge contact:
- The Tool ID generated by ILIAS
- All URLs and values shown in the configuration panel
ExpertEdge uses these to complete the connection.
Using ExpertEdge inside ILIAS
Once the connection is live:
- Open any course in ILIAS.
- Add a new learning resource.
- Choose External Tool or LTI Resource.
- Select ExpertEdge from the list.
- Launch it.
You will now be able to browse and run ExpertEdge courses directly inside ILIAS.
Support
If anything does not behave as expected, your ExpertEdge contact can join you on a short call to complete the setup. The whole process normally takes only a few minutes.
